Technical recording tips - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog For those involved in making the Practice of Peace audio book, here are some technical tips for recording your voice on your computer. Im a PC user, so this will tell you how to record on a PC. Michael Herman gave some tips earlier on the OSlist on how to do it on an Apple computer. First of all, youll need a microphone. The built-in microphone in a laptop, probably wont be good enough. Dont splurge on an expensive one. If you already own a headset type mike or a microphone for a tape recorder, you can probably use that. Otherwise you can buy a perfectly good mike for around 15 -20 US$. If you can, use a mike with a stand or one that you can wear like a headset. This will free your hands to hold the book/papers and also eliminate the noise that can come from holding a microphone in your hands. Secondly, youll need some software. The pre-installed audio recorder program in Windows wont record more than 60 seconds, and can only save sound to .wav files which become much too large. We need something that can save in the MP3 format. I recommend that you go to download.com and download and install the Polderbits Sound Recorder and Editor. What you get is a 14-day trial version, so from the time you install it you have two weeks to use it for free. Then it stops working unless you pay 30$ to buy it. Hows that for a deadline? :o) I just installed it, and it seems to be fairly simple. You start the sound recorder, and you get this window: Press the red button to start recording. Press it again to paus recording, if you want to take a break while reading. You can use the two sliders in the middle of the window to control the volume. Try speking into your mike, and set them so that the meters marked L and R dont go into the red too much when you speak. Once youve finished reading your section, press the stop button (the black square), and you automatically go to the sound recorder. It looks like this: Press the save as button, and you get this window: Here you: 1: Choose a filename, for instance chapter 5 part 2 2: Where it says stereo, change it to mono. 3: Press save 4: Youre done I suggest that before you try to record your chapter, you do a small dry run. Read just a paragraph or a page and then test the whole process to see if it works. Job hunting with a conviction on your record I recently had a client call to have his resume done, and in the course of our discussion, out popped a confession that he had two misdemeanors. They were five years old, but still, not good. He has faced many obstacles during the job search, even though his misdemeanors had nothing to do with a job or anything work-related. Even if you have a conviction, or have served time, you still need money to survive. Typically, this means you need a job of some type. But, if you have tried to find a job with a conviction on your record, you will have noticed that its very hard to get employers to accept that youll be a great member of the team when youve broken the law. Here are a few tips to get you started in the right direction. First, try consulting legal aid about getting your record expunged or sealed. This isnt available for every case, but is worth looking into. Once a record is expunged, it cant be opened again, and the matter is considered resolved. You will need to take whatever job you can to begin rebuilding your credibility. Its possible that youll have to accept employment below your previous standard of living â" even working in fast food or service industries. Even small jobs like this can help lead you to bigger things later. You can see if any of your personal contacts are looking for people. Even with a record, its much more likely you can get a job through networking and friends than you will through replying to job ads. There may be community programs that can assist you in finding employment. These are usually in cities and not often available in rural areas, and may have other stipulations attached to them. However, employers that agree to work with these programs wont be âsurprisedâ about your record. Also, these offices have a number of resources, and may be able to help you learn new skills. Small and local companies are often better bets than huge corporations, for the simple fact that they lack the legal layers of bureaucracy that are designed to shield a company from any liability whatsoever. Another avenue for you to consider is self-employment. Skills such as construction, plumbing, or auto repair a record wont come into play at all. If you have an entrepreneurial streak, you should consider these opportunities. Regardless of what you do, its unlikely that a job is just going to fall into your lap. Dont get discouraged, and know that there is a job out there for you somewhere. It will probably take you longer to find, but dont harbor false hope. Rejection happens even to applicants who have sparkling records and job histories. Dont be afraid to seek emotional support from friends or family. Once you do land a job, be sure to prove to the employer that you are a good hire. Itll make getting the next job easier once you have an established work history. Work the extra hours, follow the rules, and take extra responsibilities whenever you can. A conviction plus a string of short, choppy jobs is a huge red flag to potential employers, and will shoot you down from almost any job. Dont be a problem employee, and ride it out. Most background checks only go back seven years, and then after that, you will be in the clear.
